Risk of Overweight and Obesity in Health

In medical terms a person is considered to be ‘obese’ or ‘overweight’ when their body weight is around 20% excess than the conventional body weight or if the person’s BMI (Body Mass Index) is greater than 25.

The causes for obesity and overweight are:
  • Inactivity – Our daily physical activities become less as we tend to spend more time in a rested position, for example when watching TV, studying for a long time, etc. Also lack of daily physical exercise regimen also causes the body weight to increase.
  • Environment – Lack of recreational space nearby, strenuous working hours and schedules, excessive food portion habits, junk food diet and other unhealthy food habits.
  • Hereditary – If even one the parent suffers from obesity then you are more likely to become overweight.
  • Drugs & Medicines – Certain seizure medicines, anti-depressants and corticosteroids are known to induce obesity in people.
  • Emotions – Stress, anger and boredom are the emotions that tend to make people eat in excess.
  • Age – Aging causes the muscular volume in a person to become less, this results in decreasing the rate at which your body burns calories. Menopause in women is also known to add weight.
  • Pregnancy – A woman’s weight increases naturally during pregnancy to support the fetus in its development and nourishment. Although after delivery some women find it hard to lose the weight gained during pregnancy and this leads to obesity often.

These are the main causes of a person getting overweight and obese. Morbid obesity and excess of overweight in a person can lead to serious medical diseases and disorders.

These are the disorders and diseases that are likely to be caused due to obesity and overweight:
  • Heart Diseases – An excessive increase in a person’s body mass index (BMI) results in formation of coronary plaque around the vital coronary arteries that connect the heart. This plaque-formation causes these coronary arteries to become constricted, or completely blocked, which directly results in angina (chest pain) or a cardiac arrest (heart attack).
  • Increased blood pressure – Obesity has been found to be directly related to cause high blood pressure in an overweight person.
  • Stroke – The risk of stroke increases with an increase in the BMI. Obesity causes plaque-formation in the arteries which may rupture sometimes and cause a blood clot in the artery. This blood clot may reach the vicinity of the brain and result in a decrease of blood and oxygen to the brain, hence, resulting in a stroke.
  • Type-2 Diabetes – Obesity has been known to affect the insulin production capacity of the body which results in the person to acquire type-2 diabetes.

These are a few of the many major medical disorders that are known to be caused by obesity.

Doctors suggest certain reliable treatment methods to lose the excess weight and get rid of obesity, these are:
  • Lifestyle changes – Doctors initially will suggest an obese person to make certain lifestyle alterations in order to decrease their weight, such as regulating the ‘energy balance’ to more correct levels or adopting healthy eating habits that includes more naturally healthy food and less junk food, eating smaller portions in a meal and following a strict diet regimen.
  • Exercise – Increase in physical activity in combination with less calories intake in your daily diet results in weight loss. Physical activity will also help you prevent a number of other health ailments such as heart diseases, cancer and diabetes.
  • Medicines – The doctor may prescribe certain medicinal drugs that are known to be helpful in losing weight. If the change in lifestyle is not sufficiently effective in helping you lose weight the doctor may suggest medicines to be taken along with the dietary plan.
  • Surgery – Morbid obesity (BMI of 40 and above) is likely to be treated using one of the many weight loss surgical procedures. Types of weight-loss surgeries include gastric bypass, lap band surgery, gastric sleeve surgery, etc.
Basically an obese or overweight person is at a higher risk of acquiring a number of life-threatening disorders and diseases thus the weight-loss procedure should be started as soon as possible to ensure that the risk of acquiring these diseases in less and the person can live a normal and healthy life.
